The Story of Barcelona Lounge Chair

2024-01-24

Barcelona Lounge Chair, designed by Mies van der Rohe who proposed "less is more" at the 1929 Barcelona World Exposition, were collected and exhibited by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and were later sold to the Knoll Company in the United States. Produced in limited edition, this is one of the most classic works of modern design in the world.

This oversized modern lounge chair also clearly shows its noble and solemn identity. The German Pavilion at the World Expo that year was Mies's masterpiece. However, due to the unique design concept of the building, there was no suitable furniture to match it, so he had to specially design a Barcelona chair to welcome the king and queen.

Barcelona Chair 1

The Barcelona leather lounge chair is made of a curved cross-shaped stainless steel frame supporting a leather cushion, which is very beautiful and functional. Two rectangular leather cushions form the sitting surface and backrest. The chair was completely hand-made at that time, with beautiful appearance and practical function. The design of the Barcelona chair caused a sensation at the time, and its status is similar to that of today's conceptual products.

Many people think that this chair was specially designed for the German Pavilion at the Barcelona World Expo. In fact, the prototype of this chair designed by Mies was first used in the Villa Tugendhat in the Czech city of Brno. The chair is the result of a gradual development.
